@holyavengerone said in Feature Spotlight #3 - The Knowledge System:

Why not choose to allow a character to migrate slowly their stats or attributes or skills towards what they're using? In your example of the occasional wizard with low intelligence, if he sets his attributes to migrate and keeps using his spells (intelligence based abilities), he could overtime increase in intelligence and decrease in, say, something else he had chosen to favor at first.

That approach comes straight from Ultima Online and, although we like it, from our experience we know it's very easily misunderstood by players. We'll likely go for something more straightforward - although, as I've mentioned elsewhere, the whole "change your attributes past character creation" topic is not set in stone in our current design iteration  (by that I mean: we'll let it happen but it will be severely restricted - totally different from talents and abilities - and haven't come to a decision on what this way will be yet).

Tanky melee with healing - the "monk" or "paladin" archetypes in other games sometimes fit the role.

@lomacil said in What's your playstyle?:

I would like to play a mage if its not like in every other game just throwing fireballs and lightning. I like complex gameplay and so I prefer underestimated classes like if there is something like an alchemist sometimes.
But I usualy end up playing the roll noone wants, so I'll fill ๐Ÿ˜‰

Your "mage" character in Fractured is how you make it! ๐Ÿ™‚ You'll have several alchemist/herbalist abilities I'm sure you'll like - just learn them and create a few mage-like builds around them

I just read they changed the drawcalls, so it seems there was some work done on this end and it's likely this wont be a problem anymore.

Yeah, I'm not aware of any hard limit with Unity 5.6 (the version we're using now, but we'll move to 2017 when SpatialOS does). I could say that it'd be nice if we stayed below 2,000 draw calls per frame in crowded scenarios, but excessive draw calls just cause a framerate reduction, not objects not being rendered and whatnot

@yoggmarquise said in How u think, what system req be in alpha?:

Have a bad pc (Radeon 7870 2 gb, 8 gb ram and core i3 4130)

It's really hard to tell what quality settings you'll be able to sustain in crowded scenarios without testing your setup specifically, but it's guaranteed you'll be able to run the game smoothly. At most, you'll have to reduce the quality settings from best possible to medium/high.

@lehuan5062 said in How u think, what system req be in alpha?:

It will be on SpartialOS, am I right? So it won't eat our CPU much, my opinion.

SpatialOS is, to simplify it a lot, an integrated backend engine + hosting solution. It has nothing to do with the performance of your game client ๐Ÿ™‚

@fyrsey said in How u think, what system req be in alpha?:

I personally am on a 5 years old laptop, which is far from gaming build. However, it still performs well, and I'm pretty sure it will run Fractured even in early iterations.

It's also the setup of our worst testing machine so it should work - unless it has only an integrated GPU or something like that. I've written something about it here.

    • RE: Unity and its downsides

Hi @Lomacil  I don't get what you're referring to as "draw call limits of Unity". There is no "rule of thumb" for draw calls - you need to optimize according to several factors in your average game scenario (expected number of objects on the screen, poly count, weight of textures, etc) and the minimum CPU/GPU requirements you're aiming for.

As of today, the pre-alpha build of Fractured runs above 30 FPS* in averagely crowded scenarios even on our worst testing machine - a 5 years old laptop (CPU: i5-2410M - GPU: GeForce GT 540M) which was worth $500 back then and is probably worth $150 now. And we haven't started optimizing yet (obviously: optimization always comes a lot later in development).

So... yeah, I don't get the question "how is it possible to play it in the end?" either ๐Ÿ™‚

*I'm obviously talking low quality settings here. A 2-years old $700 desktop PC runs the same scenario at 150+ FPS on high quality settings.

    • RE: Feature Spotlight #3 - The Knowledge System

@lethality said in Feature Spotlight #3 - The Knowledge System:

Here, you can re-assign your Talent Points as many times as you want during a Resting phase. Yes, thatโ€™s it: just sit down in front of a fire change all your Talents to match the stats and abilities of your Hero, just like you do before a match of your favorite MOBA!

I'm a big fan of choices that have consequences, and feel like this might be antithetical to some of the other design principles you are going for.
Maybe I'm not understanding enough, but how will this not effectively make everyone the same and promote a "meta" where there's only one proper choice for a given task?

@Lethality @Vengu @Logain when you create your character, you define what it's really going to be in terms of strengths and weaknesses. That's a very meaningful choice.

If you create a character that is strong, resilient, decently agile, but totally dumb, that character will never be an effective wizard. Mind, there are no classes in Fractured, so it CAN be a wizard: it's enough that during a Resting phase you choose a bunch of Intelligence-based, AOE damage-dealing spells (if you've learned them), and voilร  - you have your stereotypical PvE wizard, perfect for that dungeon you want to run...

...except you'll have a hard time being relevant on the battlefield considering your mana pool is limited, mana regeneration slow, and your spells are less powerful than if used by an intelligent character.

This was to make a first point: there is no "perfect build" for a "given PvE* scenario". The build should always be based on the scenario AND your base attributes

Now, you could ask: given a certain base attributes setup and scenario, will there be a "meta" set of abilities and talents to pick? Probably yes, and that's almost inevitable. But now I shall ask something to you: if Fractured was class-based (= the abilities you can learn are pre-determined by your class) and there were no resting phases (= you talent allocation is permanent or you have to pay real money to change it), would it encourage you to experiment more, or would it encourage you to just "follow that wiki build that certainly works"?

For us, the answer is clear, but I'll wait for yours ๐Ÿ˜‰

*I'm talking PvE only here because a PvE scenario is something more or less predictable. If we're talking a PvP or PvPvE scenario there's literally no "perfect build" since it depends on who you're facing.

The number of forum account doesn't match those of Fractured accounts - if a user never opens the forums, the forum account is never created. Forum accounts are a decent measure of more "engaged" users if anything

@Mikey14117 eh, wish it was that easy. It's actually really, really hard, particularly for an MMO.

Are you entitled for (and did you try to get a spot in) the free benefits of the SpatialOS indie program (I don't recall the name right now)? Not actual funds as such, but at least helps to reduce the cost!

We'll be officially once we have our first Alpha build ready, but we're bearing no cost from SpatialOS right now anyway! What we really need are the "actual funds" eheh ๐Ÿ˜‰

This would be kind of interesting. And if the gods give differents buffs it would be also interesting with different buffs and debuffs.

Hi Duck ๐Ÿ™‚ You can only worship one god at a time, and by doing so you gain different bonuses (each god gives its own blessings). Your alignment limits what god you can worship though. There's no limit to what your character can learn, so you can be a proficient fisher and hunter at the same time, of course ๐Ÿ™‚

I know you're going to talk more about attributes in the future, but I still want to ask this question. It says "attribute", does that mean you can choose only one attribute or is it possible to make a hybrid?

There was just an S missing - fixed ๐Ÿ˜‰

@vengu said in Feature Spotlight #3 - The Knowledge System:

How exactly does it this work? We draw the world map on an ingame map? Or does it unlock automatically? Can we trade/sell maps? How exactly does cartography work?

This type of progression is personal - you needs tools, but the output is to reveal a piece of the world map for that character. You don't create an actual map object.

@vengu said in Feature Spotlight #3 - The Knowledge System:

Sounds much like holocrons in SWTOR to me, am I correct?

The effect is not necessarily similar but the idea is quite close indeed.

@esher said in Feature Spotlight #3 - The Knowledge System:

You said we can learn more about an animal by interact with/killing him, what do you mean by interact ? Is it just to come closer than the animal that reveal something new ? Or more something like a real interaction ? (like skinning, hunt, alchemy,...).
And when you're learning your spell, you can do what you want, it learning automatically, isn't it ?

A real interaction - skinning was a good example, but there are many others. For a cow it would be milking, for instance! And sure, the learning process goes on automatically in the background, you can do whatever you want in the meantime. You can even be offline!

@clavicus said in Feature Spotlight #3 - The Knowledge System:

@prometheus It seems to me this will appeal to everyone from a min maxer to a casual.

      That's the aim! ๐Ÿ˜‰

@fyrsey said in Feature Spotlight #3 - The Knowledge System:

Pick your main build to roll around, which shouldn't take too long, it seems, and go ahead doing your things, be it unlocking all the rest abilities, or building your clan village, or whatever.

Couldn't have been summarized better!

@werkrug said in Feature Spotlight #3 - The Knowledge System:

when the game will be released to pre alpha, will be some wipe before the final steam release for the public?

There will be a wipe after every time-limited testing phase. That includes beta testing phases.

@vengu said in Feature Spotlight #3 - The Knowledge System:

Since you have to go to other planets to unlock higher levels of the abilities, how does that work for evil players going to Arborius? Are there tasks that require them to go to the areas that are too hard to reach for players of a certain alignment?

We'll try to avoid that as much as we can, but there's nothing inherently bad in a Demon being cut off a few level 3s

I already thank you a lot for your approach on travelling/teleporting. This sounds like a very good compromise because trading stays challenging. Maybe there could also be randomly recurring events on every planet besides the eclipses like sandstorms, earthquakes, floods or sth. like this.

Thanks Tuom! Of course there will be recurring PvE events on the three planets - particularly on Arboreus, since it lacks an important PvP event like the Eclipse ๐Ÿ˜‰

@logain said in Multiple Races Guild and Bonuses for Race-Restricted Guild:

I kind of wonder how beastmen and demons can be in the same Guild. At least lore and even gameplay wise. That's going to be an interesting concept when we see it!

They can't. Mixed guilds will be alignment-restricted anyway! ๐Ÿ˜‰ So you'll see guilds of good Humans and Beastmen, or guilds of evil Humans and Demons.

If a Beastman is in the same guild as a demon it's because it's a Renegade. Similarly, if a Demon is in the same guild as a Beastman it's because it's a Redeemed. Please note Renegade Beastmen and Redeemed Demons are very complex concepts (for us to implement and for players to achieve) and will be implemented way later than the first Alphas.
