Unity has blocked SpatialOS - What's up and what it means for us
-
@OwlsaneGaming Iam sad now
-
Well, I think everybody will learn something from it

@Pwnstar said in Unity has blocked SpatialOS - What's up and what it means for us:
Wow, Unity backed down and reverted the changes. That's very telling.
Improbable was a genius by getting the rest of the industry involved in this.
I hope you are sarcastic.
Improbable was the absolute douchebag (mind I remind you that after blowing this to extreme proportions they announced a joint fund with Unity's competitor to incite developers to change engines), and now Unity has to back down to basically bullies! Yeah! How nice!
-
@Prometheus Looking forward to it. I want to see this game become vibrant and hearing more about what is going on helps me to see it going that way.

Out of curiosity, what would you have done in their situation?

I'm not. Improbable was really smart to get other developers involved in that travesty Unity calls their "Terms of Service".

@Jarvis said in Unity has blocked SpatialOS - What's up and what it means for us:
Pretty scary news at first, but to be honest I'm still kinda worried if they don't bring back support.
I don't think Improbable ever got much support from Unity in the first place, and their integration with Unity is already great. I'm not particularly concerned
-
@Phaethonas remember that Improbable didn't have any reasons to make problems of Unity while for Unity the only reason to make problems for Improbable was to get more money (from them or from their own cloud service). Knowing that you still think that Improbable is the bully? Both sides were doing business but Improbable was a bit smarter about it and in better position.
@Prometheus what about support from Unity for Fractured?
-
Need I remind you that cutthroat actions lead to cutthroat retaliations.
Unity conducted a low blow. Improbable hit back... even harder. Since they had better standing in the issue
-
Were you aware that Unity is building their own competitor to what SpatialOS is?
This was purely an attempt to shut down a threat to their new income stream:

I came to the forum to ask: where are you guys?! Now I know... Instead of developing a game they are running with lawyers to solve the problem. Sad news for us.
-
@HannielK The devs aren't running around with lawyers. The Unity/Improbable issue wasn't their fight.
-
@HannielK i am quite sure, the guys working hard at developing, because they need to get an Alpha ready.
Beside this, to know the companies are in trouble which products you use and need and in this reason there are some neccessary thoughts to make, is a hard part in a Studios life. Because you have to think about possibilities for worst case, to hold your businessplan running.
In this case, the guys don't hang around here the whole time to express themself, but they are working towards a future for their company and also for us, who expect a soonish starting Alpha. For the rest well said, @Specter - It was not their fight, but it has stolen much of time of them.
-
unfortunate ig

I wonder if any dev from Unity/Improbable was involved as it was marketing/pr stuff. Especially on Unity side it looked like no working brain was used

Improbably certainly quickly made hay out of it, with that new $25 million fund for switching to Unreal.

Well, that money was not meant to be for Improbable, it is a Fund for Developer.
And this Money will not be a gift, it will be just a credit.Improbable made something else with this action, but not many want to see that.
Whatever their business plans tell them, but the case was leading to a more clear Rule and the hope, that all these nice platforms can stay open and continue their business that helps much people to let visions come true.
Also it was the right step to get the statement by Unity to make it clear in their new TOS that they want to stay open in kinds of use of their Engine.Conversely it had a strong direction into a closed system, to use it just with their own platforms and authorized Partners.
Good that they decided for being open.
Even they had this small sound behind written words, like a small kid in the sandbox "Okay, you can take the bucket, but since we are no partners, you can't use my shovels!"

I didn't mean to imply otherwise. I just meant that Improbable helped put it together with Epic.
