New spell Ideas

I remember when we use too think of spells all the time many of them where pretty dumb Such as the in the infamous " undead fire breathing replicating pigeon" I want more wacky spell combinations i think the main idea behind that one was cast undead , imbue fire and replication. if not new spells combo the existing ones already in game

Thats the link too the preliminary schools of magic

  • Yeah it would be interesting to see something like COOP combos or just straight combos.

The ones i can think of the i used to use back in the D&D Days were the following.

    1. Grease/Fire Ball - Spell combo to create a pool of fire.
    2. Hold/Wall of Fire - Holds target in wall of fire for increased DOT
    3. Wall of Water/Cone of Cold - When cast in a hallway 5' wide it creates a wall of ice 12" thick
    4. Web/Wall of Fire - Similar to Combo #2 but adds damage when Wed ignites.

There are quite a few that can be used in combos, it just takes imagination. (And Programmer support in PC Games)

Undead poison homeing pidgeon was a beast

Think it started as a Polimorph a rock in to pidgeon then pidgeon attacks player and is set on fire with fireball and poisoned incase the enemy wants to eat it, then raised from the dead becoming a undead poison pidgeon

There actually is an spotlight that talks about the different types of spells we have I was thinking of linking that just to give an idea of what people can do I'll do it later today

  • Coop combos is a neat idea and adds a lot to the gameplay.

Isn't it a bit early to discuss this though? There's still a lot of functionality missing in the game that has to be finished first before there's any spare amount of resources to dedicated on additions. Feature creep is a very real threat in game development.

  • TF#12 - PEOPLE'S HERALD

@Logain its not about trying too add them all too the game i think its more about trying too see what people come up with and seeing the ideas that come out of it

but we already should have spell interaction. they mentioned electricity and water puddles, or freezing water to make a temporary bridge.

  • TF#12 - PEOPLE'S HERALD

@Jetah well yeah we should have some already but i think he is talking about new spell interactivity and alll the crazy ideas we said plus this was just supposed to get some more ideas

we'll have 1200 ranks of spells and 1.44m combinations. trust me, we'll have plenty of time to figure them all out! (that's 1200^2 as the same spell shouldn't interact with itself).

  • TF#12 - PEOPLE'S HERALD

@Jetah well that's assuming using the same spell with someone else doesn't boost it i mean like if we both use fire-bolt at the same time it might get boosted doing more damage

  • TF#12 - PEOPLE'S HERALD

    @dj35 bigger boom

I'd like it if using fire and someone else uses wind together made the fire explode

water then fire would make steam burn damage then fog aoe

Using earth then fire could cause a clay trap or lava wave depending on the ground under the player
If on a beach you would get glass shrapnel explosion

Ice and wind may cause a blizzard

    So on

Totally. I'm on the same page with you, but I think coop spell combo is a neat idea worthy of being added on the roadmap to be implemented in some patch after release.

  • It surely is nice idea but such features have already been in some games (ESO had some "team spells" where your abilities had to be used by teammate and GW2 went further - your spells would would combine with teammate´s spells - combo fields and combo finishers. Yet in matches only guys you would meet using it were guild mates...and even then not that much. I´d rather work on rest of the game and on features everyone will use and leave abilities like this as last thing to do.

  • If the effects are strong enough, people will use them. In fact, I don't know what MMOs you guys played, but the ones I did required a good deal of coordination between players and guilds tried to take advantage of this as much as possible.
Anyway, now that you mention those games, Aspirin, I reckon that Magicka also had coop combos - for example, multiple people shooting a beam results in a stronger one fired on an altered angle. On the other hand, if they make mages so badass, nobody will play archers or melee.

Fire arrows ice arrows flaming swords rock defenses lightning reflexes could all be ways to make one player op while the others buff
taking on a boss or turning mele in to CC pvp tanks

  • @Razvan There has been topic "will magic be stronger then melee?"...we dont know yet. In 1v1 it might be balanced, but once spells will boost other spells, then team vs team with better magic combost will prevail. But depends how much will "saves" deal with it, how long can be stuns stacked and whether "immunity auras" like aura of immunity fto fire will work (stack with other immunity auras ?..no matter, imunity has nothing to do in PVP).

  • @asspirin For large scale PvP it's enough to have an aoe magic tree specialised in anti magic if you want to make room for melee characters. For example, a big not-so-fast moving shockwave that silences and cleanses magic effects results in frontline being mandatory for each side.
However, I really I hope Fractured won't be as heavy on aoe spells as Albion.

I loved the spells from Ultima VIII long time ago...

Sorcerers type of spells, where you had to read books in game to even know how to create them, then gather needed resources, then find pentagram on floor, then manually place resources on specific pentagram spots, like you saw in book, then put magical stone in the middle, and recite a spell... and only if everything done correctly, you imbued the stone, and could pick it up and use the stone to cast the spell that's "inside".

And herbalist type of spells, where you had to use magic pouch, gather specific herbs and other mats, and mix it in pouch (you also had to know exactly what and how much by reading the books) and then you created the spell, and imbued something with it (wand or something), and could cast it.

Modern games lack such complexity that was found in some old school RPGs. Perhaps Fractured could bring some of that back.
