I like the idea of Corrupted Breached but I also recognize the possible downsides. You can get unique resources from Corruption especially when sealing the gate. This is the goal and reward what players will be after, however, the question is how long? If this happens too often and the whole system starts to feel more like a burden what you need to do that you can actually play the game, then we have an issue. I am sure people will eventually get bored with that system and it needs to be developed further. As long as those players who do not want to participate Corruption activity does not have to, at least most of the times, then I guess the system will hold longer.

I still have to wait my favorite spell, however, that AoE spider web ability is worth of mention, it is kind of cool.

I have a hard time doing that. I don't want to support a company that treats their fanbase like crap.
Yes I understand your situation because you are already involved.

RE: Question about enviromental damage/effects
@asspirin I did not say it cannot be compared, I said it cannot be directly compared. Therefore, Albion is comparable, as well as ESO, both as applicable. I have seen heavy armor caster builds in Albion especially with Cursed, Frost and Arcane staffs, not just random stuff but also as part of the meta. Anyway, I do not think that no one is demanding that many casters should or need to use plate armor, it is enough if some will do and there is that opportunity.
Yes we have a full "freedom". Unfortunately that is an illusion of freedom because attribute point distribution and race will determine our role in practice. Therefore, these character creation choices will lead us to use specific abilities, talents and gear. Character creation is basically in contradiction with the other systems. Even we have in theory a "full freedom", that is not the case in practice. Current character creation spoils imo the potential of abilities, talents, gear and the idea of a real full freedom system.

RE: New World Sucks + Fractured Makes a Guest Appearance!
What it comes to New World I will personally focus to examine the game itself and not the community drama. If the game is good I do not care if the Community Manager is unprofessional or how the developers handle their feedback processes in general. Sometimes it is nice to be part of the community but sometimes it is liberating just to focus enjoy the game and ignore all the hustle and bustle happening on the background.

RE: Question about enviromental damage/effects
@asspirin Well, e.g. Albion has a system where players can freely mix gear pieces and last time I saw it was a sandbox MMORPG and not a single player RPG. There cloth, leather and heavy armors are balanced offense vs. defense in mind. That system is not directly comparable because Albion has also abilities in the gear pieces but it still shows that it can be done if devs want to.
I would say this is not just a caster in plate matter it is how players can in general freely mix gear pieces with different ability sets and e.g. use different gear pieces in different situatios, depending of the content what they are going to do (solo/group/PvE/PvP). E.g. perhaps you need more sustain when playing solo and you get that with heavier armor but perhaps in group you can go with lighter armor and be more like a glass cannon who relies on healers.

RE: How will you be making your $$$?
@Jetah This is not about sandbox having rules. Yeah some rules are in TOS like account related stuff, behaviour in general, cheating, advertising, and stuff like that. TOS is not a place to say players that "do not play on every planet with your guild members, even we allow you to do that". WTF? That makes zero sense. If any developer would do a stupid thing like that, I would LMAO and leave.
If developers do not want players to cross-realm then they will do in game restrictions to prevent that kind of behaviour. However, I believe that devs will not do that because they do not want to. I bet they want players to have that oppurtunity to play how they want in as many planets they like and they do not want to make any restrictions there.

New World currently has two fundamental mechanics I'm looking forward to seeing develop:
- Opt-in PvP (PvP will be more mission-oriented)
- A dynamic PvE world (the Corruption will keep spreading if everyone ignores it)
I'm also interested in seeing how those two mechanics are balanced against each other. The Corruption could be strong enough, for instance, to unite everyone against it, making PvP more of a sideshow.
Me too, that settlement upgrade system sounds pretty interesting as well.

Im on the fence untill I play it
Same here. However, that beta test phase will show us the state of the game (when NDA is lifted) and I will make my purchase decision based on those public videos and reviews.

RE: Question about enviromental damage/effects
@asspirin said in Question about enviromental damage/effects:
@Tuoni You can choose whatever you want (abilities of all schools between each other), yet of course there have to be some kind of limitation, otherwise everyone would go heavy plate user with shield casting nukes.
The better your offense the more your defence will suck and vice versa. But thats not limitation, but "balance".Da-a.
The other possibility would be lowering dmg of offensive spells etc. for plate users, but then their damage would still suck, so they would still be tanks, only difference would be maces===>magic.
Lowering damage is one option and actually what I meant at first place. Wearing a plate armor and being a caster does not necessarily need to mean that the damage will suck, it could be moderate for example. Perhaps it is not optimal for a caster to run with a plate armor but maybe there is abilities which can boost your damage or get some extra mana back, and that way players can mix more with the builds.
-
RE: Question about enviromental damage/effects
It all depends what kind of armor system is planned and balanced based on that. If offensive abilities cannot be cast when wearing plate then that is quite hard restriction already and not much more is needed. However, that sounds like there will not be that much serious build variations and warriors use plates, rogues/hunters leather and mages robes. Offically we have "freedom" to choose what ever we want, but in practice it might be mainly opposite.
-
RE: Question about enviromental damage/effects
If a healer choose to go with plate I guess he will trade that extra defense for less effective abilities or for smaller mana pool and/or slower mana regeneration.
-
RE: How will you be making your $$$?
@Jetah I do not mean that. I mean why developers would allow players to create different races and play on different planets and then restrict their playing with TOS? That does not make any sense. If developers do want to restrict cross-realm guild activities they should do that via ingame mechanics.

RE: Bartle's Taxonomy and this game.
I would say that griefers could be a sub-category for killers.
When examined today, I see the most flaw in Bartle's theory that Killers and Achievers are set as an opposite types, because those can easily go hand by hand as well. Perhaps back then there was no serious goals for PvP and it was just having fun to kill other players without anything particular to achieve. Today PvP offers so much more and typically has a key role in many MMOs, especially in sandbox games. WoW is a good exmaple where these two aspects are combined using a PvP ranking system. Later the PvP evolved from open world to arenas and battlegrounds to offer more goals to achieve on top of the PvP action.

RE: No grind for real?
@OldMule said in No grind for real?:
I don't know why people say it isn't going to have a grind. There's always some sort of grind. In Fractured it is no different. You have to grind specific mobs until you unlock specific spells... and then until you unlock talents... you will have to grind to collect currency to buy land or goods, or grind the goods themselves. It isn't "levels" but it is. Each mob unlocks spells gated by knowledge level with that mob. It is a cool system, but it is still a grind. That being said, it takes basically no time at all to grind the mobs. Getting to the mobs was the real grind.
True. It does not matter how much the grind is sugar coated, it will still be grind. However, some grinds are more tedious than others, so there is differences, obviously.

RE: Question about enviromental damage/effects
I would say warrior and rogue types needs abilities as well which benefit from the environment like the mages' skills do. They should not be left out of this feature, no matter are we examining this from appealing or balancing point of view.
Rogues and hunters could benefit at least from flora so they can hide, camouflaged, stealth in the bushes and ambush from there much more effectively than in the open ground, that would actually make sense as well. Heavier melee classes could benefit from the open ground or utilize earth element and rocky environment for extra CCs and protection.

RE: Bartle's Taxonomy and this game.
@Razvan I was personally thinking that social part more like an in game thing and not like I behave on daily basis. I like to spend time on forums and discuss about design and development of games but without the connection to the game I would not be here just for having a nice chat. If I think my behavior in game, I do some guild stuff and group content as well but I mainly like to do my own things. Therefore, I consider myself more social outside of the game than how I behave inside. Moreover, if we think of that gaming profile, it was generally about digital games and not just focused on MMOs. Therefore, I guess it is normal to get high Social percentages or low for Action part because we, or at least I, represent MMORPG genre. If that survey would be only about MMOs I believe the results would be somewhat different.

This gamer profile thing was really interesting and now when I have analyzed a little bit more the results, I have to say that it somewhat surprised me. Having Story only 21% is odd because I mainly like the story lines if game have those at first place. Having Social 52% could be less tbh and Action only 18% sounds pretty low. If I think Bartle's Taxonomy I guess I would put myself to Achiever category, however, I am kind of all around player why I see Bartle's theory kind of problematic, at least when thinking myself. Anyhow, most of the percentages are kind of what I expected but perhaps I waited more for the Achiever part, because achieving goals represents fun for me.
I was quite surprised myself that i scored quite high on social, but when I reflect upon it, on the broader perspective a lot of the activities that I enjoy tend to be socially oriented.
As for Bartle's Taxonomy, you gotta keep in mind that this was written and published more than 20 years ago. It became a cornerstone for many mmorpg theories but naturally, things have evolved overtime and more layers of nuances were uncovered through the years of studying and applying it so it wouldn't be 'fully' applicable for every situation, particularly with us who have peculiar/developed taste when it comes to mmorpgs. The technology has made leaps and bounds that allowed us to have/use concepts that weren't possible before.
Yeah I know, I am somewhat familiar with Bartle's Taxonomy or at least I have watched some videos related to the topic. The main problem imo is that players are categorized only to those four specific categories and having no other options or different variations. Therefore, I liked more of this gamer profile thing because it calculates every aspect individually.

@Ostaff It is true that the big boyz have not come yet and they will catch the game during the beta or for the launch.
The best defense we have against those incoming guilds is that all the governor spots have already been taken and accounted for. So the best cities will already be taken by the time they get here.
...and the cities are claimable.
