Will there be fast traveling?
-
Fast traveling (ships, flying paths, carriages, teleport gates..) in MMOs and especially in sandbox games is something where development can go easily very wrong and mess up the whole game. That is why I am asking.. Is there any official information about this matter? And how players would like to see this?
Imo, if the world will be relatively large and there will be far distances between towns and activities, then game needs some fast travel options. Who wants to use most of the playing time just running around? I guess not so many people. However, adding too much fast traveling will also hurt the game. Especially in areas where is mentioned to happen open world activities. Moreover, too much fast traveling will effect negatively for economy side of the game. There will be less small local economies if all resources and trading items are easily aquired from almost everywhere. So I hope we can see very middle-road and balanced fast traveling. Some options, but not game breaking from economy point of view.

I think traveling would be good. At least I don't mind spending the time going from one place to the other. With Fast Traveling being done through spells that you can gain. At least that is how I would like to see it done.

between planets, yes.
between towns/locations on the same planet. i hope not.

There is planned teleportation on the same planet, but you can't carry resources through - it's geared as a way to meet up with others quickly. Was in Spotlight #2.

@kellewic
still dont like it.

I think it's a good compromise. People don't like walking simulators, and there have been memes made about them
The faster you can group up with friends, the better. It means people are more likely to log on even if they just have a few minutes to spare. More people logged on, a more lively universe, a better experience.
Trade, resource gathering, and so forth all require walking still. You can't mine, and then teleport to a trade location. I'm sure it will be balanced well.
Just my 2c

If land will be huge, and walking from one end to other end would take several hours, then some kind of fast travel system makes sense.
But it needs to be made in a way so that it can't be abused by players. So as mentioned, no carrying resources through.
Actually not carrying anything through besides what is slotted in your own gear slots, so you cant bring spare gear sets to your guild members after they have been owned somewhere for example.
Also there could be a cool down on how often you could use such system to travel through, so you can't just go back and forth without limitation.
-
Nope, you walk, you could teleport some little distance with a skill (teleport). All you want to know is here : https://forum.fracturedmmo.com/topic/684/hi-there/4
And they are portals to navigate between the stars

This Spotlight #2 was actually very informative and I am personally very happy of the content. Traveling system gives us some possibilities to move and group up faster, but we can not use fast traveling for transporting resources and other goods. I also like how some fast travel options can be unlocked via knowledge system. It was quite long text, but I will copy it under here anyway if someone has not read it yet.
"*TRAVEL AND EXPLORATION
Exploration is a staple of the Fractured experience, strongly tied to the progression of your character. In Fractured, youâll want to travel to faraway lands to discover every inch of the world to extract all the knowledge hidden there and expand the options given to your character.Of course, such a unique type of progression â all part of the Knowledge System â requires travelling to be more than what youâre used to in other MMOs â which typically boils down to walking or riding from point A to point B (without getting murdered on the way if the game supports Open PvP). Indeed, on Fractured survival mechanics come into play to spice things up, requiring a greater deal of preparation the longer your travel takes and the more extreme the environment is. Letâs have a look at them following the (mis)adventures of a player whom for the sake of simplicity weâll call⊠You.
Food and drinks. You start your journey to the largest town of the realm. Just like fighting, travelling accelerates the need to feed yourself. While some regions are rich with edible resources and you can hope to find food on the way, this one is quite bare and requires adventures to plan their trip wisely. You open your bag, and realize thereâs only a slice of hardtack in it â and this is not LOTR. Damn!
Clothing. This time, youâve brought the perfect quantity of food and water with you and youâre sure youâll reach your destination with ease⊠but youâve forgotten you have to cross a mountain pass in the meantime. Your journey ends up with a new human popsicle on the way, reminding travelers that on Fractured equipment doesnât matter in combat only.
Rest. You wonât get fooled this time. You have plenty food, water and all the clothing you need. A little too much, in fact. Youâre heavy, and youâre tiring quickly. When your legs refuse to move any longer, you set up a makeshift bed, feast aplenty and close your eyes for a shirt sleep â but your lame camp offers little protection, so a pack of wolves ends up feasting on you. Too bad!
As you might have understood from the examples above, the safest route for a new player is to to move from one inhabited location to another, get some rest at local inns and explore the surroundings. Once you get better equipped and experienced in dealing with the wilderness, youâll be able to create safe camps to take naps and dive into long and perilous travels through remote locations. If you engage in the merchant profession, things get even more complex, of course. In Fractured, there is no magical âstashâ or âbankâ that makes your items easily available everywhere you go. You can earn some warehouse space to store your items in a village, but such space is not free â and even if you unlock it, what you deposit in the village stays in the village. As your character inventory on Fractured is quite limited, youâll need wagons to move resources â which means animals to drag them, and a proper escort to see that your bounty doesnât fall to unwanted hands. This is once more a wide topic though, which will be given further elaboration in future feature spotlights.
TELEPORTATION
A MMO without fast travel allows for exciting open world adventures and guarantees true profits for merchants, as we discussed above. On the other hand, having to walk or ride long distances just to meet up with your friends or reach your favorite dungeon can become unbearably cumbersome in the long run, disregarding how exciting the travel is.Is it possible to get over this ostensible dichotomy? We think it is! Here are the three main fast travel options available of Fractured.
The easiest fast travel option, Gateways are magical doors located in a few key locations of each planet. When you enter one, youâll be able to instantly teleport to any other Gateway located on the same planet that you have already discovered by physically travelling to it. Hereâs the catch, though: youâll be subject to various limitations when using one, including the inability to carry resources. Theyâre a good option to group faster with your distant friends, but not suitable for merchants!
Teleportation Magic. In Fractured, youâll have the chance to learn a few spells that will allow you to teleport yourself to other locations on the same planet, subject to limitations similar to those of Gateways, including what items you can carry and the need to discover the destination first. When casting one, youâll be drained of your energy and severely fatigued for a while after teleporting. Moreover, while more flexible than Gateways, earning access to certain destinations through teleportation magic wonât be an easy task.
The prime way to travel to other planets, Stargates require a great deal of group effort to be summoned and donât last for long. After crossing one, the time youâre allowed to stay on the new planet is limited and varies according to your race, your alignment and your destination. Demons are a notable exception to this rule, having been gifted by Babilis the ability to travel to other worlds more easily to bring terror to the other much hated races. However, the penalties theyâll be subject to are no smaller than those suffered by the other races⊠and sometimes, actually worse."*

What it comes to fast travel options, I hope we will see more carriages and harbours with ship routes rather than portals. Makes the world more believeable that way. Portals are of course fine when traveling between planets, but somehow stupid and easy solutions when speaking traveling inside continent.
-
Agreed. Portals should require extreme preparation and rituals to use imho. It shouldnât be a simple, oh Iâm at the portal so I can get to point B.
-
Agreed, portals should not be the default mode of travel in my opinion.

Well fast traveling between planets perfect the way it is planned, at least for me.
Was those portals between planets planned to need some effort to get open? Rituals or something?

What would be nice as for travelling between locations is to join an NPC trader/traveler/carriage, whatever of sorts, you pay them and they bring you from City A to City B at a faster pace and without the need of your input. So it will be faster and convient for you. At the same time the more you carry with you the more you have to pay them, both because of the weight and because of the potential robbers it could brough along the way because of your belongings.
This would be quite normal system used in other games. You can travel free when naked, but travel cost gets higher with items and gear with you. Usually more valueable and heavier goods costs more. Its needed to not mess up local economies.

There also could be a requirement that, to create a path between cities, the city has to have a trading post or courier office or whatever of sorts, i.e. you can use this type of travel only between cities that are "connected".
I love this idea. Leaving fast traveling partly to players would go nicely to sandbox theme. Maybe some contracts are needed between these towns and cities as well.

@Tuoni With the exception of Eclipse, when demons have nearly no-effort access to Syndesia, it requires to find the gate and activate it. Unfortunately details are unknown to me, but it has been said to open a portal between planets, you need to have a group as it is a group-effort activity and that demons have easier time doing it due to Babilis' blessing.
I watched Stargate. we need a computer, coordinates and too much power!
I hate fast travel but i do love teleport pads. Diablo and Path both have them but it could be cool if the players had to build them. The system could be setup similar to Eve Online Stations. You need lots of materials. Real craft time of 30 days. Then it has to be activated. Restrict them to only being Cities of x size which would give an incentive to upgrade the towns to something bigger.

Yeah I remember reading about that. That is really cool feature imho. It gives demons a free/fast access, but in otherhand people can prepare for invasion. This will most cerainly cause interesting encounters.
