What about classic ones like: yu yu hakushu or neon genesis evangelion for example?
Many new animes are rich in detail an have promising story twists but are very short or cut off.Don't get me wrong there are some good ones too.

I am reasonably hyped for the upcoming episodes of 'Overlord', but that is probably because I've read the Light Novels, so I know what is coming up and want to see it animated.

I really liked Neon Genesis Evangelion. I've seen it first time as a kid, but had to re-watch it much much later to get more understanding from the ending

If you want classics then Akira and Ghost in the Shell (1st one) are the best
From newer ones if you like classical music with anime comedy then Nodame Cantabile (listening to OST right now).

I think the light novels are great. Obviously has more detail, more arcs and more scenes with more context for things than the anime as LNs tend to do, however I still think the anime adaptation is pretty good as far as adaptations go.

Robotech .... mashed up several completely different anime and made one rather strange but strangely satisfying stories. Big robots stomped on stuff and fired swarm missiles.... it is true... it had it all.

Look for "End of Evangelion" (a remake of the 2 last episode), good luck for this psycho drama

This series is very difficult to review... I do it twice (for fun)... a very longest series with minmay in starlet... (you want to slap the hero again and again) If you want to see very good robot battle : "Super Robot Taisen", "Gurren Lagann" and "Broken Blade"
