New Ultima Online?

  • TF#6 - DIPLOMAT

Is this game going to be a "new" Ultima Online?
If this game is, is it possible to "learn" professions and speccialise on them: in crafting weapons as a blacksmith or to provide food as a hunter, for example? And people are actually interested in buying/stealing in your shop?

Or can every player craft everything without the need of the "other" professions?

@holyhong Dude, did you watch that

? There in General all is told

@prometheus said in Crafting and Gathering - What's the plan?:

@Thayn we'll have a Spotlight dedicated to crafting, as @Vengu mentioned, and it would take a little too long to reply here eheh. Suffices to say, you'll definitely be able to play as a crafter only and your role will be pivotal in any guild / group.

@Dagimir definitely - not only because of the crafting system, but also given how important travel is in Fractured - check out the last paragraphs here! 🙂

@muker thanks for your quick reply. I must have missed that part indeed. Still, only if I can play like a crafter only, does not entirely mean that I can really enjoy playing as one if anyone else is able to craft equipment as well and as easy as a "full-skilled" blacksmith to be played more as a roleplaying character.

Also, your quote seems only to affect guilds and not "all" players as a crafter or did I understand this wrong (again).

    Thanks dude!

  • TF#12 - PEOPLE'S HERALD

@holyhong You can build your home in the world and there do your favorite craft. Just Guild will give you more features/ resources

  • TF#6 - DIPLOMAT

    @muker thanks again.
    This sounds very promising!
Hopefully there are a lot of real players willing and keen to create "professions" and "run" an entire city and enjoy roleplaying as well.

And if the devs keep this door open, there might be a plausible chance to revive the atmosphere of the old masterpiece "Ultima Online".

    @holyhong @muker said in Entwicklung / Richtung:

There are plenty of titles that inspired us to make Fractured. In the MMO department I can name a few:

    • Ultima Online for the freedom and the emotions given by exploration.
    • Shadowbane for its town building and conquest mechanics.
    • Haven & Hearth for its survival side.
    • Guild Wars 1 / 2 for its character building.
    • Vanguard for its race characterization.
    • Talking modern stuff, I could name Albion Online - or better, its dev studio Sandbox Interactive.
    • etc etc etc.

Outiside of the MMO world, classic single player Action RPGs for the exciting and skill-based combat - you name them, there are so many! Tabletop games (D&D above all) and classic RPGs games (BG, Planescape) also inspired us for their character attributes, styles of magic, alignment...

    I could go on forever.

Of course, most of the games I've mentioned are just inspirations - don't start thinking Fractured has, say, survival elements as hardcore as H&H - that's not the case 😄

In the end, we've felt that in the sandbox MMO world there was still a lot of room for innovation and I hope what we've revealed so far and the future spotlights will convey Fractured's potential in full! 🙂

I've been following since September, and any of my gaming friends who I've convinced to try it out, I tell them it reminds me like someone took Diablo/Fable and crossed it with UO, then added city building to it.

As everything is going to be crafted, I'm sure there will be the need for someone who enjoys that to be making and selling/trading gear or whatever in the towns. I don't think it's going to be a "new" UO though. (perhaps you may want to check out Legends of Aria in the meantime?)

The scope of this game, and the unique interplanetary connections, separate it from UO more than anything though, the storyline here, the horizontal progression and the way the environment plays such a huge role in the game depending on race choices and travel needs let alone knowledge and skill progression, set it miles apart.

I'd say, if you loved UO back in the day, LoA is a really close approximation. But, if you want more than the old grind and gank, then this game really offers a shit ton more. (saying this as an old UO player here too) The promise of this one is something for everyone, and we're all hoping it's going to live up to that.

Dig into the forum and the spotlights for sure, keep an eye out hopefully soon for that crafting one, and the city management one, I'd say you'll fall in love.

@greenfire this was a very nice summary for a newcomer as I am.

Thank you, your post also helped a lot. I started to find out more and more about this game and I'm getting more and more excited.

However, I am not totally convinced of this resting system yet. Especially for characters who enjoy crafting, trading and city-life-roleplaying seem to suffer the most, imo.

Because, if a warrior skilled character needs some crafted equipment, he can just transform into a crafter/trader easily and then turn back into a warrior when creating a special gear is finished. It is hard to believe that there will be long term motivation for crafting or city life characters if they are not "special/uncommon" in this world.

By the end I hope players will prove me wrong 😉

  • TF#10 - CONSUL

@Savitr you might find this interesting as an old Ultima Online Player ^_^

(Sorry if I’m too off topic, I just find crafting interesting.)

  • TF#12 - PEOPLE'S HERALD

@holyhong okay, you'll be able to rest and prepare to do different things when you are rested, but your attributes will remain the same. I can imagine that if you are a fighter, you'll set your attributes so that you will be good at the style of fighting you prefer to engage in. You'll go out in the world intending to gather the knowledge required to run that as well as you can, and are less likely to be looking around for the knowledge needed to be a great crafter.

You might be able to do some basic things but in this game with the way the player driven economy will be, you'll probably prefer to go kill things and trade what you get in order to get gear. Otherwise you'll have to spend time running around looking for things to make it, and furniture with and you won't be able to spend as much time running around fighting. So you'll find a good crafter and employ them in your guild and put them to work, giving stuff to them so that they can make it for you and your guild mates while you run around killing stuff.

So yeah, I really don't see anyone but completionists gathering every single bit of knowledge so that they can do everything. Nor do I see people who prefer to pvp doing their own crafting when they can get another player to do it.

What race are you thinking of? I would happily add a crafter to my guild.

  • TF#6 - DIPLOMAT

@greenfire Sounds logic and hope it will be more or less like you said.

Well, so far I must admit that the human planet inspires me most, because of the feudal system and both PVE and PVP action.

But be aware, I am only keen to become a crafter if it is fun to play as one 😉 if battle and fighting is more fun and devs put their main focus on that one, I'll most probably swing swords as well 🤺

  • I'm looking for somethig that reminds me of UO too. Best game ever

Legends of Aria is marketed as UO remade. Can confirm it's very much so, fun too. I played alpha, need to download the new client and see what's changed.

  • TF#7 - AMBASSADOR

Which UO are you looking for a new one of? It was basically three totally different games throughout its lifetime.

  • TF#9 - FIRST AMBASSADOR

@Holyhong There "no profession system" in this game you do what you want to do at the disposal of the item gathering/bought/sell
=> cities markets are not connected, so if you need some ingredient you must go (or send one, or send a team) to find what you need, you free. Here you could be your own Lord British 😄 so is more than UO and... I hope, you don't have to be killed by a bunny at lv1 to understand how fierce the world is... (

  • TF#12 - PEOPLE'S HERALD

@gofrit bunnies in the KS video made me giggle

  • TF#6 - DIPLOMAT

@fibs I must admit I cannot remember which "version" I was playing it is just too long ago... I played UO around 1999 maybe?

Played in a cybercafé at Valence (France) near 1998-99 when I studied computer science (Baldur's gate and Might & Magic time on local network with 5 players)
