Mana for physical toggle skills?

    I'm sure this has been mentioned before, but after the last patch i was hoping it wouldn't be an issue. However, i still need to stack points in INT just to keep enough mana regen for a single Knife Fighting toggle... seems off to me. It would be great if physical damage skills didn't require points in traits that aren't otherwise required for a physical damage build.

    @greyfang the point in Fractured is they don't want a dump Stat view. By making melee and ranged skills mana dependant, which is mainly INT with a dash if CHA, melee and non-magical ranged cannot "dump" INT



  • That's good in theory. But in practice, characters using STR-based abilities can't dump-stat INT because they need the mana, but characters using INT-based abilities can dump-stat STR. STR does give HP, but CON gives better HP and it gives resist as well.

    INT gives ability power, strong mana, and resist.
    STR gives ability power, weak HP, and carry
    CON gives ability power, strong HP, resist, and stamina
    DEX gives ability power, attack speed, resist, stealth, and lockpick
    PER gives anti-resist and anti-stealth
    CHA gives ability power, weak mana, and luck

    INT/DEX/CON are critical skills because they give resist
    PER is critical because it lets you overcome resist
    CHA and STR are only useful if you use CHA or STR abilities.

    CHA is luck which technically affects everything.

    STR regulates health regen.

    Plus, in a gather intensive game like FO, don't undervalue Carry capacity.

    Is the balance between abilities perfect, by no means, but it is intended to be that every character should not dump any Stat, and for the most part that's true

    I'm of the idea that CHA effect on Luck should be doubled, so that it isn't that easy to dump it.



  • @GamerSeuss That would be true if we all only had access to one character. We have access to multiple characters, and the only thing unique about them is attribute scores. If you roll two characters with the exact same attribute scores, and give them both the same items, same abilities, same talents, they are essentially the same character. You don't have to "earn" anything for them, other than the gear that can just be transferred via a house chest.

    So you can have your normal business ability build, and your siege ability build, and your siege attribute build can dump-stat STR and the only thing you give up is a the HP regen, which you can get through INT via Life Drain.

    I have my gatherer that is well-rounded. My two PvP builds both dump-stat things. Come kill Nijah. Dump-stat PER and INT, and drinks mandrake like water.

    Seems like mana regen should get moved to CHA.

    @MidniteArrow I though of this many times, but it would make playing mage quite harder at low levels.

    Consider that the devs progressively increased the mana regen to 2 per INT from the original 1. This fixed the mana issues at low levels, but we are seeing that it makes mana a non concern at high levels, so it could need another touch.



  • Adding in regen seems to make things worse:

    INT gives ability power, strong mana, mana regen, and resist
    STR gives ability power, weak HP, HP regen, and carry
    CON gives ability power, strong HP, resist, and stamina

    PER gives anti-resist and anti-stealth
    CHA gives ability power, weak mana, and luck

    Worse because INT gives the strong version of everything. It gives 75 mana, not 50. It gives mana regen. It gives resist.

    INT/CHA and STR/CON should be mirrors IMO.

    One should give +75/Resist, the other should give +50/Regen
    Or maybe +75/Regen vs. +50/Resist

    But int doing +75/Regen/Resist is OP

    Nothing else does that. STR does regen, but weak on HP compared to CON. INT is strong on mana compared to CHA.

    thanks to all for the info and breakdown. i had rolled a mage first and noticed no issues with low STR, whereas with an assassin with low INT i was mana-starved. the explanation of the duality is nice, but i don't get the need for the duality, if that makes sense? either way, i understand it better now, thanks again!

    @Maltos i'm of the opinion that you shouldn't have to count on enchantments just to make a standard physical damage build out of the box. lol...

    I agree. I think there should be a stamina resource for non-magic users.

    @MidniteArrow you can have multiple characters but that doesn't mean dump stats should be a thing.

    In GO, the reason for other characters should be more about being able to try all 3 potential playstyles, or having a character you leave in town to manage crops and other city functions, especially when your main is far enough away to make such chores problematic.

    FO really is built around a design of one active character per player encouraged, tgat you change builds on based around current goals using the presets.



  • @GamerSeuss generalist characters won't have specialty dump stats, specialist characters will. A team of specialist characters will likely beat a team of generalist characters, because the generalist characters will have spent resources on capabilities that are not helpful in the current situation.

    I think it is perfectly fine if you don't want your characters to have dump stats. But we should stop short of telling everyone how to manage their characters. I certainly have never approached this game from a "one active character" perspective. I've got my town manager/crafter, my PvE gatherer, and my two PvP support. None of them are generalists. They all excel at what they do, and they all have dump stats.

    @MidniteArrow also remember tge number of character slots at release is unknown. We just know a couple of the packs include extra slots, but at release, I'd be surprised if more than 3 are available (so one per planet us possible on base accounts)



  • @GamerSeuss PFO had a single character per account, kinda, and I had much more of an identity in that game than I do here. The more I play this game, the more I miss that one. [Pathfinder Online]

    But it failed miserably. It was too hard to play and never reached critical mass. Sandbox without a lot of players, there's just nothing important to do.
