There's also another MMO named Legends of Aria that looks (almost) exactly like your showcased images, but that project is failing to deliver their basic promises because Unity is a lackluster game engine.
There is some visual similarity from using the same assets, but the actual gameplay is different. Mechanics make the game, and Fractured has some great ideas here.
I don't follow your leap from SIMILAR GRAPHICS MUST LEAD TO BAD GAMEPLAY because this one Chinese game screwed it up.
-
Shards of Aria was first called Shards Online. The devs were advertising it as the spiritual successor of UO. I backed it. I could barely play it back then. The controls were clunky, the UI was confusing and the lag was horrible. Of course it was alpha. I quit playing but followed it for awhile. The game failed not because of unity. It had tons of issues. One being they wouldn't do anything about the reds. New players couldn't even leave the town to level up because reds camped all the spawns killing everyone. Even res killing. Fine example of how griefers can destroy a game.
-
griefers were just playing the game their way which they enjoyed. if anything blame the company and noobs.
-
It doesn't matter who is the griefer and who is not.
It only matters who has larger numbers. If there is 100 griefers at some spot and 1 person is trying to pass through solo... RIP that 1 person.
If there were 3 griefers and 20 people passing through, then RIP griefers.Simple as that. Problem is that solo PvE players have issues organizing as usual.

I don't see a problem when it's the people who can't work together. it isn't the developers fault when the solo players can't organize a counter-raid.

Blaming the company makes a lot more sense than blaming the engine.

@keshanberk Can you show us the assets they using from built-in and cheap packs that you are referencing?

Be nice to see some evidence backing up these claims
Pretty sure they have a dev who made the most recent spider monster.

Second page "credit goes to our art director" why would they need that if they where just buying assets...
-
I think OP is saying their game, not Fractured, has purchased assets.

OP said this "I could tell you were using Unity. The 3d assets you're showcasing are either prepackaged with Unity or are being sold for cheap on the Unity marketplace. "
Seems like its directed at fractured to me
-
i understood that as the items Fractured had were placed on the marketplace. but OP never linked to the assets to give proof.
-
@Jetah yeah I was asking for proof, i was defending the fractured team lol
-
oh, i misunderstood.. sorry!
i have to say, even if they're buy assets and changing them a little, or not at all, and it's cheaper than building them from scratch then it's a pretty good decision financially! So long as there's no copyright issues, i'm ok with it.
-
@Jetah i don't think they will be hard to build, because i am sure, Michele and his Art Team knows well how to use 3D programs to get the needed assets. That will be their main job at the Studio. So i guess they can create in no time the assets they need. Maybe the more complex things will take a while, but to make Trees, Plants, Logs and and Stones are the things every Game Graphic Designer need to know as a basic.
Even me, who is an absolutely Noob at Blender, will be able to create these small assets - probably with less nice texture, but still.
To accuse them, that they mainly used built-in and cheap packs assets, is something you have to prove.
I was today searching in the Asset Database of Unity and i did not found any similar of them.
But maybe the OP has some evidence.
-
@Kralith yeah i was looking as well couldn't find anything , it's why I was asking for evidence
-
but i'm saying if you can buy assets already made, in the style you need, then why spend the extra funds to have someone create it from scratch. I can see buying it for a base and changing some things here and there. but if it's an exact match then just buy it to save the time if it's cheap enough.
-
while I couldn't find any examples of mmos still running that are poplular and use unity the closest game to this i found would be Subnautica. Its a different kind of game however they are both open world. I hope this helps
-
@Jetah yes, thats valid.
But i don't think they need to do this.
It is not that they have tons of assets in the game yet.

Subnautica is doing really well. Sold eight million copies.
