How should shields work? WoW vs. Vermintide style
-
In World of Warcraft, shields are pretty much additional armor pieces, that can lessen your chance to be critically struck. (There's more to it for any fellow hardcore WoW nerds, but that's the bare bones without the math)
But in a game like Vermintide, shields are able to completely avoid damage.
I would like to see skill-based shields, that you have to manually block with, or at least can fully block attacks from a particular direction. I don't want to see shields become just another stat-stick.
What do you think?
-
@dulu very interesting question
-
@dulu shields (spell) in WoW are absorbition spells. You avoid the damage. Dunno how does it work on Vermintide.
Shields(gear piece) in WoW provide stats like every other part of the gear. WoW is not an action combat game where you need to direct face the shield to prevent a damage.I suppose that you would like to see things like OW heroes.
-
@dulu more like WoW I think, extra armor piece with maybe certain abilities that require shield to use, like for example "shieldbash - causes 3 second stun"
-
@benseine I suppose he meant something skill based like this:
to prevent the damage, where you need to face the right direction to prevent the damage.
-
@finland I saw the Vermentide video. I highly doubt we will see anything similar in Fractured
-
@benseine have you checked mine? that could be possible
-
@finland hehe funny and cool. But ingame machanicwise that will still be an ability/skill that requires a shield in your inventory to activate. Same as a fire spell that is an aoe cone in front of you.
-
@benseine yup instead dealign damage it prevent the damage in a cone. that would be cool. but Tricky for common players.
-
in the live game play video they mentioned friendly fire. I'd assume each projectile is an item that can be blocked or parried.
-
@finland I'm talking about actual shields.
Like shields you carry in your off-hand.
Not absorb-shield spells.
-
@dulu the mechanic could be the same. In the video you can see a mecha but could be a knight with a shield. The cone identify just the are effect. You need something to know were you are facing the shield imho it's not a 1st person shooter like vermintide.
-
SHIIIEEEEEEELDS. So, I would not like to see in this game the shields, which will be just textures or will be used only to hang a buff on themselves, as it happens in many MMORPGs. It would be nice to see such a mechanic of shields: You put a shield and block the damage and there is a certain scale that gradually begins to decrease, when it comes to the end - you get something like a stun, because it is difficult to keep a shield; and the bigger your shield - the faster the value of this scale will fall. This all should be influenced by such stats as endurance. The higher the endurance is - the easier for you to keep such a pressured strikes. Most likely this will not happen, but I wanted to get out.
-
I don't think fractured will have the kind of combat that could support active shield blocking like Vermintide. It would be pretty janky with click to move. The closest we might get is moba style shield skills.
-
left click could do a basic attack while right click could be an active block.
-
@jetah you need one to move the char. I would prefer to see a block like every kind of spell with mana usage and cd
-
You do know that left click can be setup to move and attack, right? Diablo and PoE does this, I wouldn't be surprised if all dungeon crawlers do this. or they can setup wasd to move the character or just 1 key setup to force move.
-
@jetah that way if you miss click you will attack someone.
-
Remember, this is click to move, press skills game.
Implementing skilled shield blocking seems not an easy thing do do in this type of game where there is no keyboard movement.
Click to move plus active blocking plus targeting stuff on ground with your spells, sounds like major pain in the ass annoying thing to do, and not like something I would play.
-
@gothix Not that hard as well as you need to move to your target and just press the skill on your keyboard to block (or use another attack skills) the damage in direction you move.
