When did this project started ? and why Unity ?

Hi all,
Did this project started in 2017 or is it an old idea that needs only implementation ?
Why did you pick Unity and not Unreal Engine 4 for example, cause you don't want to share 5% with Epic Games or its something else ?Thanks !

Honestly I don't feel like we should worry about which engine they have chosen to use. Unity is a rather robust option these days with some impressive capabilities. There are always upsides and downsides to any of the ready-made engines available on the market. I'm betting they did the research on which was their best option for this title. That's about the only thing to worry over I feel.
If graphics are what you are worried about then I'd say go look up some images of how sharp Unity 5 can potentially be.

Unity has a pretty amazing graphics structure. It's almost, not the same, but almost similar to UE4 to be honest. Not a lot of developers use Unity anymore when it comes to MMORPGs, in fact I think UE had just become the standard haha. I applaud the studio for trying something different.

From what I have heard, Unity is pretty bad for MMO's. Fractured is working with SpatialOS for the MMO side of things though, so it will be interesting to see if that fixes the weakness of Unity.

if it's good enough for Family Guy Online......
-
It will not be a very graphically demanding game. Unity is fine for what the game is.
-
Well Unity isn't that bad if devs use proper way of working on it

Unity is getting a bit long in the tooth these days but its far from the worst. They can pull some good stuff from it still.

If I recall Shroud of the Avatar is using unity. Visuals are pretty darn good but ram usage is a bit wild currently. They are still working on optimizations though.

mostly cause graphics isn't everything, idk why people think super good graphics is what makes a game great...

Pillars of Eternity, Wasteland 3, Subnautica - they show clearly that Unity games can have both good graphic and gameplay

Unity is a pretty solid game engine, also there are a couple games made with Unity that run on SpatialOS as well, one of them being Worlds Adrift (I think).
