    • What kind of game do you hope Fractured will be?

So I had a good conversation with @Tuoni regarding attribute points and we're on the different side of opinions. It made me think, what does the majority of the forum-posters think about this? Granted, forum posters are the smallest amount of users, next to forum lurkers and then non-forum players - but having this info could be useful!

My advocacy is for more RPG, character identity is important to me and I don't like having a blank slate that can be changed "on the fly" or easy enough. Think yellow lotus potion in Conan Exiles, if you're familiar - and that's a sandbox survival where it makes more sense than an RPG! And that game can't have alts!

@Roccandil The stats are fairly common among other RPG's, especially dungeons and dragons. Though we can't expect new players to know D&D, we can expect tooltips to explain what stats do and the new players ability to read what they do. They can create an informed decision based off of that, to the fantasy of how they'd like to build their character. If there are issues with ability balancing, that's a different issue than just straight up rerolling to be something else.

And they can experience the game on their first character to learn it, there's nothing wrong with that. That's literally how the gaming industry used to be - in Super Mario Bros. 2 (US Release) you didn't know the differences of each of the four characters - you chose the one that resonated with you. You could still beat the game with every character, they just had different perks. You can use another character (such as an alt) to get perks for specific levels if you wanted. It'd just be weird if Luigi had Princess Toadstool's hover perk! Or if Princess Toadstool had Luigi's flutter jump! It'd remove all sense of character identity and it wouldn't matter which skin you decided to use.

In the end, these viewpoints are on two different sides of the spectrum. Since it's an RPG though I'd -hope- that character identity is meaningful though.

I'd also like to point out that mage staves were also just implemented for this testing phase. They probably wanted to get the item out first and then smooth it out later.

    • RE: Concerns related to the attributes

@Tuoni Some people like putting in the time and effort of planning a character, others would rather be able to correct their lack of planning in-game. It appears we're on opposite sides of this. And character identity is NOT a small problem in an RPG. You don't have to be a role player to still appreciate character identity.

And yes, once all the knowledge is attained, it's 100% possible to swap classes every 10 minutes depending on how attribute resetting is done. Also, just because you aren't min/maxed to USE a skillset doesn't mean you CAN'T use it. Which again, boils down to a jack-of-all-trades of having balanced stats vs min/maxing.

If they have attribute resets, character identity is lost. One solution to address this would be to make it a gradual thing; remove one attribute point to go into an attribute pool (so stat weights still apply) and being able to add one point a week or something. Then from a character identity standpoint it's a transition and effort, not as simple as "lol this build sux new build plx" and you're completely different.

If they don't have attribute resets, just make a balanced character if you don't want to knowledge grind on alts 🙂 Enchanting can help you hit those higher level stats.

      50 chance it'll release.

      50 chance it won't.

I'm not sure that's quite accurate...just because it's yes or no doesn't mean they have equal value in 50/50.

False. It will or will not happen. It's 50/50.

      Two outcomes doesn't mean it's a 50/50 though.
A 99/1 STILL has two outcomes. That's like saying you have a 50/50 chance of dying today because you're either alive or dead Jesus Christ, how people live longer than a month is a statistical anomaly at a 50/50 rate!

Like I already answered for Mudz, this a sandbox game not a themepark were rerolling characters should be a core. Think all the new players who have not tested the game in test phases and how much mistakes they will make at the character creation stage. They do not have the knowledge what would be the best solution or what they will actully end up to do in the game. And if I think this from my personal point of view, lets say I have used most of my points for strenght and constitution, and then I want to reroll for a caster after a year. I am quite sure that I do not want to start a new character just because of that. SBI did this mistake in Albion Online where it was made too hard to change the "class" and role or at least it was behind a long grind. Now they have made a change where you can drain the progression from a spear for example and move that to another weapon. This was a pure quality of life change to prevent players to quit the game because respeccin was made too hard.

My biggest problem with free availability to reroll is you lose character identity and choice and just have a blank template. To me, that breaks a big part of any RPG. If you can just apply a blank template to any character, why have more than one character at that point? Or why have more than three if you want to try one of each race? Choice -should- matter. If you want to be a jack of all trades, put 13-14 points into every stat and you'd be perfectly able to pull that off WITHOUT breaking character identity. But if you're rolling around in full plate mail, sword and board, and the tankiest dude ever - you shouldn't be able to be in full cloth and the übernuts caster in 10 minutes.

Of course, just my opinion of an aging gamer that doesn't need instant gratification/change because of a choice I made earlier 🙂

@Tuoni The stat weights of the attributes follows how dungeons and dragons does it; the higher the value you go the more it costs. This is to encourage more balanced builds, or if you want to go all in on certain stats then it punishes the flexibility of it. With the ability to have multiple characters I don't see why rerolling attributes should be an option, if you're unsure of what to do you can make a more balanced build instead of a min-maxed build for your first character.

You can also stay always logged in, that's how I got around that...well, mostly because I also keep an eye on the forums several times a day and can't be bothered to login that many times. And if you're at work doing it, consider it a "You're at work, quit dicking around!" tax 🙂

@Gothix I'm pretty much the same! Blocking spammers is the only real reason I block people, for the same reasons - it prevents you from seeing chat. And quite frankly, I don't need to see "Leerooooooooooooy Jenkiiiiiiiiins" for several years, or "Did somebody say [Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker]" - or any other flavor of the month memes that are out. It's also not a good coping mechanism; blocking anyone for disagreeing with you or getting into an argument doesn't build social skills either - which can be a big part of an MMORPG!

Mobile app integration can be good if implemented correctly; though I wouldn't want to be able to do too much with it to make it too distracting working/driving (unfortunately)/etc. Maybe check stations at your house to see timers; check to see if your markets sold anything (if that's in the game), and check guild chat like the WoW Armory app did. I wouldn't want anything to be intractable, just visible. Limit distractions. Remove "have to play from phone to win" mentality.

From seeing the development from phase to phase, their open communication and roadmaps, and their attention to the community and fixing bugs; it doesn't feel like they're slowing down any time soon. These are all good signs!

If this does fail, I think @Prometheus will have broken my heart harder than my wallet (Immortal pledge.)

I'm hoping we'll be getting more blueprints akin to the campfire that we'll be able to place outside of our plots.
This would certainly be good, as breaking down raw resources into processed resources would allow bigger transports!

I'm not trolling you, it's called having a conversation. I'll break reply to your points though.

@Manaia You are one bold little troll, kid.

Wolves can be found pretty much anywhere on the map

      False.

In my experience, on ALL the alpha test phases, wolves are the most common enemy and are found in most places on the map. There are few places that wolves do not spawn. I'm not saying they have a dense spawn rate, I'm saying that they are a common appearance in most places.

[...] don't spread misinformation saying that wisps are a common enemy all over the map

      I never said this. Ever.

21 hours ago in this thread you said: "It bothers me a bit that we're forced to stack so much investment into magic for a very common overworld enemy"

Maybe I misunderstood what you meant by "common overworld enemy" - I took this as they are common everywhere in the overworld, not just the Heartwood.

Thanks for once again being a hypocrite. If you're going to wildly accuse me of "spreading misinformation", don't lie while you're doing it.

I'm not spreading misinformation. It appears that there is a misunderstanding of what we're both talking about though. Hopefully I was more specific in this post of what I meant while talking about wolves being a common enemy. We can agree to disagree that our personal anecdotal experiences differ though about the commonality of wolves on the map.

I'd also recommend using etiquette while addressing people on forums and in all methods of communication (text, email, talking, etc.) - stick to the topic on hand and don't lash out in personal attacks (i.e. hypocrite, troll, kid.) You'll just come off as an emotionally triggered person and people will view what you say with less credibility.

    • RE: Spoilers: Gameplay narrative is working for me!

@FibS Wolves can be found pretty much anywhere on the map, wisps can ONLY be found in Heartland. They're significantly different. That's like saying Goblin Enforcers are a common mob because they're in abundance in both the Goblin areas. You don't have to be interested in continuing, but please don't spread misinformation saying that wisps are a common enemy all over the map and saying wolves spawn locations are just like them.

@FibS I literally said in my previous post that wolves are a common enemy, they spawn nearly everywhere. Some places more frequent or fewer. The wisps though are common in their sub-zone, but that doesn't make them a common overworld enemy. I also doubt Heartwood is 1/3 the entire continent; though I haven't measured.

The wisps aren't a common overworld enemy; they're common in the Heartwood but not the entirely of the overworld.
Wolves. Wolves are common, get hit with a bad pack of them as a mage and you're in for some pain. Get hit by them with a fighter type and you'll cleave/pierce them with your attacks to kill them quicker.
