Stealth does not work when being off screen

If you or another player are in stealth and you become 'on screen' to each other then the other person can see the person in stealth. Going into stealth while already 'on screen' appears to work fine.
It seems that it is based on a certain distance, as just going 'off screen' does not make the other person become visible.
