Hi guys .. only joined yesterday .. am i right in thinking i can't play the game until the "winter alpha" in february and that i will have to obtain an activation key to participate ??

Yes, you are correct in that assumption. The soonest we will be able to play is the next testing phase, which is planned for Februaray, and you will need to purchase at least a Master Pack from the store to gain access.
You can also take part in a few key giveaways, which I am sure will happen again in the future. With those you are allowed to play for one testing phase.

Btw. you shouldn't expect as much as 'playing the game', but rather 'testing some mechanics' during these Alpha tests. Yes, you can already enjoy PARTS of the game, but you are likely to encounter issues and plenty of functionality simply isn't there yet, which can have a considerable impact on your play experience. I'm not trying to discourage you, the very opposite would be true, but I'd rather set expectations right.

I'm using the alphas not just to kill time or test their content, but to make all those n00b mistakes so when my 'for real' toons are born, they'll benefit from all that trial and error!
Between now and the next test, 3 things any newly joined player can do to get up to speed:
- Read through forum and wiki posts to get familiar with game mechanics and learn from mistakes OTHERS have already made. You'll also get familiar with some forum voices and know who's trustworthy/helpful and who isn't so much. Following the trustworthy ones will start your ingame network of relationships and responding thoughtfully can win you prizes, so don't be shy!
- check out some of the great videos done by our content creators to get a taste of how the game feels and learn about features already in place. Two I recommend highly are @Nekrage and @Oxfurd
- Find a copacetic guild. There's a forum thread of recruiters and also a good Fractured discord channel if you want to get to know folks in the guild before you join.

@PeachMcD Thanks for the great advice .. I'll digest everything I can before the February test .. seen some YouTube videos and it looks great even though its only in the testing stage .. learning the gameplay ,crafting etc. will keep me occupied until then .. cheers
