I know I asked this long ago and I'm sure several have since, are kickstarter backers going to get a steam key?

Probably not. Both keys would be valid and the team fears that the secondary market of keys would get flooded by people selling the second key.

You should probably offer occasional limited-time keys to kickstarter people. You could offer 2-4 weeks so the players can cause a viral effects of getting people they know to play. People are more likely to stay if they know people playing.

@spoletta If I buy it on steam and I'm already playing on the standalone launcher. Can I log into the same account on steam or does it force you to create and log in with a new account?

It would probably not work. When you launch from Steam you would get requested to indicate a DS account, and it will probably give you an error if it finds a package on the target account.
