How to get small stones?

They are on the ground, just pick them up.

When the servers first came up everyone was going for small stones. I had to travel outside town a bit to find some.

Indeed. I spent a good several minutes walking along places literally littered with rocks and stones, and couldn't find any that I could gather. And when you find them, they're heavier than they probably should be. Especially when you try to build a campfire.

They are, quite literally, everywhere. Now granted, a particular area might have been picked clean for a time, but once you know what they look like they're all over the place

Turning down the graphic settings, and the thick grass, help finding small stones.
