Plans for Pets?

I've been keeping an eye on game patches and notes and haven't really seen anything about plans for pets, and I was just wondering if I've missed anything. Is there a plan for the role pets play in the game, or will they always remain purely cosmetic?
On the same note, does anyone have any ideas or hopes on what they should be for?

@Komomori Both cosmetic and combat pets are planned.

both types are planned all the ones offered via the Exp system are cosmetic

Check foundation rewards and you will get general idea how cosmetic pets design looks like.
There was some other really nice artwork in spotlights and content pills.
