You open the door in time to see her, crisp blue sleeves rolled up blood-stained arms and sharp implement in hand, poised over the shackled victim like a god about to deliver judgement to the unworthy. She plunges the prongs into their torso, sinking deep into soft flesh before it hits something—the Core. Wrapped around the two metal points, it shines through the victim’s body like the sun, lighting up the room with an overwhelming sense of belonging and hope. You can’t help breathing in deeply, but it seems like it’s at the victim’s expense--their eyes widen and roll to the back of their head; they thrash about, slamming against the shackles with such strength you drop into a fighting stance before the action even registers.
Still whistling, the woman twists the instrument as if she is just unlocking a door. The victim screams through the gag, and the temperature plummets. Light pulls back on itself, back to the Core, howling as it races past you. You feel familiar ghostly hands crawl up your skin and take a few steps back, pressing your back against the door. You don’t understand how the woman is still standing there holding the tool, still whistling despite the Voices hissing and the Core shrieking. You can only watch, frozen, as she keeps an eye on the dying Core, her grip firm on the pulsing metal until the shadows return and the air falls into silence.
With a sharp yank, she pulls the prongs out of the remains of the corpse and holds it up to the single lightbulb. Her whistling comes to a sudden stop and she frowns and looks closely. “Damn,” she says. You start at the humanness in her voice. “The alloy isn’t conducive enough.”
