Look at the news tab on the main site, the game is still in alpha. no release date yet. If you want to play alpha or beta then get one of the backing packs.

Additional to what @Azurael said, there has been and likely will be several opportunities where people could test the game without purchasing a key though. If you're unsure and don't want to purchase yet, you can wait for such an opportunity.
