Ward Shatter doesn't seem to work

I got the ward shattering ability from the Grokoton Sage, and then attempted to use it on the Archmage Outlaw, but it had no effect on his ward bubble.

Shatter wards works wonderfully as everyone who fights elementals has unfortunately discovered.
In your case it didn't work because you realized the typical scenario of "The unstoppable" against "The unmovable". In this case the Unmovable wins. Globe of spell protection, protects the caster from any single targeted spells. Shatter wards is a single targeted spell, so even if it is made to destroy protections, it cannot destroy this one.

Hmm. I guess I expected it to work, because otherwise that globe seems really powerful.

Takes a huge amount of mana to be kept, and does not protect against AoE and skillshots. The only way for a mage to remove it though is with Dispel Magic, cause it is an AoE so it does not get stopped.
