Totem of Wildfire - Not possible to loot if this totem does more damage than you

After casting Totem of Wildfire and you let it do more damage than yourself to the enemy you will not be able to loot.
Getting "You have no right to loot this" message when trying.

Shouldn't you be able to loot when you summoned the totem and should be the owner of the loot due to that?

This happened 100% when trying with black bears, but when I have tried with Sproutlings and Woodland Wisps it doesnt happen every time.
