honestly all the sandbox games recently coming out look and sound amazing...but like what happened to the beautiful model of free to play? i totally and completely get why pay to play is getting more popular but i wish there would be at least a test game for them, so i dont waste my (extremely rarely coming) money on it. life is hard

There is the free to play pre-alpha, but you need to be in the top 100 or win a drawing to be considered. Considering that the price is currently only 20€ (If you pledge Recruit for 20€, you get a copy of the game), I would say that a test game is not needed.
However, if you are unable to pay, you can wait for other community member's responses to the game. Once the alpha comes out, I'm sure there will be a lot of chatter about how the game is.
